The basics of Search Engine Optimization- On Page SEO

The dawn of Internet has brought new areas for advertisement and marketing. With respect to traditional marketing, online or internet based marketing is much more specific and has high ROI. Older marketing techniques like Television ads, Banners, pamphlets involved big amount of money and time with minimal returns, moreover one could not track the whole cycle. But it’s not the case with online or internet marketing; there are numerous tools and software which can track the whole cycle of marketing and its ROI.

Search engine optimization is an technique for optimizing websites such that they appear in top result of search engines, here optimization means  designing and developing website  according to some specific guidelines, which involves minimum use of design, features and coding, to be precise it the website should be user friendly. This article will be part-1 brief introduction on the basics of On-page and Off-page optimization in a simple way.

SEO involves two techniques:

On-Page SEO: On-Page optimization involves designing and customizing websites according to search engine guidelines:

Off-Page SEO:  Off-Page optimization is what you do to promote your website externally.

On-Page SEO

On-Page SEO requires some basics knowledge of HTML and CSS. It has been made easy with the introduction of CMS like WordPress and Drupal.

Page title:

Every website has some content like pages or post, title of those pages or post is one of the important factors in SEO. Page tiles usually appear in Search engine results so it is very important to optimize page title with words or sentences which are relevant to the content.

For example, if you are writing a blog post about your visit to a city in Europe, then it is important that you use the words “city in Europe” in your page title, like “My travel to a city in Europe”. So whenever people search for “city in Europe”, there is a better chance of your post appearing in the search results.

Meta Tags:

Meta tags are keywords or words which should be included in your html format of your content. Meta tags or keywords should be relevant words of your content. The best thing to do is, simply do a research of your content and search words that reflect your content, page or post. For people who are using CMS like WordPress, there are many plugins which can help you out, making your work with HTML minimal.

Friendly URLs:

URLs are the address of your pages and posts. Always include short, precise and search engine friendly URLs. Why it is important, because they help in better indexing and crawling. If possible you can add keywords in the URL, but don’t overdo it. For example, www.example.com/blog/basic of seo is better than www.example.com/345/folder/basic of seo.

Meta Descriptions:

Meta descriptions are short descriptions that are added in the html format of page or post. Many forget to add Meta description in their pages and post. These descriptions are important as they appear in the search results, when your page or posts are listed. You can add keywords related to the page or post in the description, but again one has to be careful of overdoing it.

 Body Tags:

When you write an article or write-ups, it is a common practice of making sections and paragraphs for better reading. For making the content more interesting and readable body tags are used. Body tags usually contains H1, H2, H3,…etc. tags. Usually H1 tags are used for page title and then the other tags for creating different sections and paragraphs. These body tags are used by search engine to determine what is important in your content. You can use keywords or sentences in these headings, be sure to use it properly as search engine use it to understand the context of your content.

Keyword density:

Using relevant keywords and sentences in your content is very important. It helps search engine to understand your content. But make sure you don’t use too many keywords in your content just for search engines sake, as it will be bad for your website. Try to use less than 5% of your key words in your content.

Images:

Images are a great of making your content more appealing, it can also be used to break paragraphs making it important for your content. One of the important things webmasters forget about images is that it can be used for websites SEO. When you upload images, you give certain titles, descriptions. Adding keywords in those titles and descriptions can help in Image search results. You can also use Alt- Text, which is important for visually impaired viewers, as it is used by special screen readers to understand the content.

Internal Links:

People usually think that links from other websites are better for their websites SEO, but these links are not only the important ones. Internal linking or inter links to other pages or post of your website can be a great way of improving your websites user experience. It can also be used for SEO too. Internal link can help your audience find all your content and it will also make navigation in your site easier. One of the best things of Internal linking is that it helps search engine to crawl and index all your websites content. It also helps in defining the content of pages with relevant keywords and sentences. There are many ways of internal link building, but the three most common are content links, permanent menu or navigation links and sitemaps.

The length of your content:  

Illustrated and informative contents are usually preferred by search engines.  So next time when you think about content think about the audience not search engines.

These are some of the On-Page SEO techniques which can be used for improving your search engine results.  These methods can help increase the value of your pages, building relevancy with keywords and help search engines crawl and index you website in a better ways.
